Westbound Interstate-84 is closed at Northeast 43rd Avenue, and TriMet train service is disrupted, after two people died in a collision with a MAX train alongside the freeway.

On Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 9:39p.m., North Precinct and Traffic Division officers were dispatched to a report of two people being struck by a MAX light rail train along I-84 at Northeast 28th Avenue. When officers arrived they found two people deceased at the scene. Preliminary information suggests a vehicle was damaged in a single vehicle, non-injury crash on the freeway. Speed is suspected to be a factor in the crash. After the crash, 2 occupants of the vehicle jumped over the barrier to retrieve a car part that was in the TriMet restricted area. Both were struck by the train.

The Portland Police Traffic Division Major Crash Team responded to the scene and is investigating the incident. During the investigation, I-84 is closed all westbound lanes between Northeast 43rd Avenue and Interstate-5. Eastbound I-84 is not affected. The Oregon Department of Transportation is assisting with traffic control. Tri-Met personnel have responded to assist with the investigation. During the investigation, MAX Blue, Green and Red lines are disrupted with shuttle buses serving stations between NE 7th Ave and Gateway/NE 99th Ave Transit Center.
