The suspect in two downtown stabbings, Moctezuma Garcia, who was charged with attempted murder, was indicted today by a Grand Jury on numerous felony charges.
Garcia was put a parole/probation detainer when he was taken into custody on August 26. Supervisors with the PPB Major Crimes Unit worked with Washington County Probation and Parole Services and the Washington County Jail to ensure that Garcia was not released from custody while the arrest warrant was written and submitted. Since Garcia was detained, Detectives have been working to collect evidence, speak to witnesses, and seek out and process video footage. In cases where a suspect is already in custody for something else, it is common investigative practice to delay filing charges to allow investigators more time to process and analyze evidence. The additional investigative work helps ensure that the Grand Jury (GJ) gets a more complete and comprehensive summary of the facts of the case.
The victims are recovering from their injuries. The adult male who was slashed in the neck remains in the hospital. The man who was stabbed in the chest in the 700 block of Southwest 10th Avenue has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
On Friday, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office presented the cases to a Grand Jury. The jurors returned an indictment for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree (2 counts), Assault in the Second Degree, Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon (3 counts). He remains in custody of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division.
