On Sunday, February 20, 2022, at 1:32 a.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies serving the city of Cornelius responded to a report of a shooting at the Mojitos Bar & Grill at 2575 Baseline Street. Several people called 911 to report that a person had been shot and that the suspect had left the area in a vehicle. 

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a 27-year-old male with two gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. 

Detectives from the Washington County Violent Crimes Unit responded to investigate and were able to identify the suspect as 20-year-old Jose Ceja-Sanchez. At 7:30 a.m., Ceja-Sanchez was located and transported to the Washington County Jail on charges of attempted murder in the second degree and assault in the first degree.

Members of the Violent Crimes Unit are called upon to investigate serious violent crimes such as homicides, suspicious deaths, adult sexual assaults, kidnappings, robberies, extortion, serious assaults, elder abuse, and missing persons.
