In a video posted to TikTok, two school counselors who work at Mountain View middle school in Newberg, OR., Annie Bynum and Erin Dobias, can be seen waving their middle fingers in the air while saying “fuck you.”
The video appears to have been taken at their place of employment, and during work hours.
First, some context:
After a much heated debate last year, the Newberg School Board voted to ban their employees from displaying political and ideological symbols at work, including symbols such as Black Lives Matter flags, White Pride flags, LGBTQ flags, and Confederate flags.
After the vote to ban political symbols passed in the school board, some community members started a campaign to recall two of the school board members who had supported the ban. However, the recall vote failed in January of this year when most Newberg residents voted to keep the school board members who voted for the ban.
The video made by Bynum and Dobias appears to be a response directed to certain parents, students, school board members, and anyone else who believes that displaying political symbols at schools should not be allowed.
Now, the video:
The video starts by showing what appears to be the inside of a school classroom or office with a rainbow flag on the wall that reads: “We Believe, Black Lives Matter, Love Is Love, Feminism is for Everyone, No Human Being is Illegal, Science is Real, Be Kind To All.”
At the top of the TikTok video, there is an incorrectly spelled caption which reads: “I don’t think that flag should be aloud in the schools.”
At the beginning of the video, the lyrics to a song titled “abcdefu” by the artist Gayle can be heard playing in the background: “I always try to be nice, nothings getting through so let me spell it out…”
At this point in the video, both Bynum and Dobias jump into the screen, waving their middle-fingers at the screen, and singing:
“A-B-C-D-E, F-you, and your mom, and your sister and your job and your broke-ass car and that shit you call art, FUCK YOU!”
