Early on Tuesday morning, February 8th, an Oregon man killed himself after mistakenly shooting and killing his brother, rather than a black bear, which he meant to shoot instead.
According to local authorities, the man grabbed his gun to protect himself from a black bear near his home in Sunny Valley, a small town in Josephine County.
Unfortunately, instead of shooting the bear, the man accidentally and tragically shot and killed his brother.
The man contacted 911 and said that he had “accidentally shot his brother while loading a gun.”
“Based upon the investigation, it is believed the caller took his own life after calling 911 to report the accidental shooting,” the sheriff’s office explained.
Travis Snyder, Undersheriff of Josephine County said that when officers arrived on the scene, the man was found deceased from a gunshot, and that officers also found a second man, presumably his brother, also dead from a gunshot wound.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victims and an investigation is continuing into the incident.
