With great sadness, Sheriff Caprice Massey shared the loss of one of WCSO’s own deputys, Deputy Richard “Rich” Thompson, who tragically passed away following a traffic crash. On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, just after 5:00 p.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the incident which occurred at the intersection of SW 201st Avenue and West Baseline Road.
Rich was riding a scooter home from work when he was involved in a crash with a vehicle. Community members, along with deputies and responding emergency medical services attempted lifesaving efforts. Sadly, Rich succumbed to his injuries shortly after the crash.
Rich joined WCSO in October 2001 and was certified as a Corrections Deputy. During his career, Rich worked as a Field Training Officer. He also served as an adult in custody (AIC) coordinator, assisted in the Work in Lieu of Jail program, and had been assigned to the Court Security unit since 2023. Rich was awarded the Meritorious Service Ribbon in 2018.
Rich is survived by his wife and two children. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed camping, kayaking, paddle boarding and spending time with his family. Rich used his coaching and mentoring skills outside of the office to teach archery to kids.
The Washington County Interagency Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded to the location and is conducting the investigation, led by the Forest Grove Police Department.
