On November 8, 2022, a Washington County jury found Matthew Alexander McAdoo, age 44, of Hillsboro, guilty of second-degree murder with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm. Judge Erik Buchér presided over the trial.  Senior Deputy District Attorney John Gerhard and Deputy District Attorney Sean Kallery prosecuted the case.

On June 17, 2021, the victim and owner of Titan Towing, Patrick Sanford, age 51, of Beaverton, was operating a tow truck at Park Creek Village Apartments in Hillsboro. At about 8:15 a.m., the defendant aggressively confronted the victim for towing his vehicle. The victim released the defendant’s vehicle.  However, at about 8:50 a.m., the defendant aggressively confronted the victim a second time, while holding a handgun. In fear for his safety, the victim pepper sprayed the defendant. The defendant responded by shooting the victim three times, killing Mr. Sanford.  At trial, the defendant claimed that he was acting in self-defense.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 5, 2022 at 8:30 a.m.  The defendant will remain in the custody of the Washington County Jail pending sentencing.

The Washington County District Attorney’s Office thanks Detective Devin Rigo of the Hillsboro Police Department and his investigative team for their work.  Mr. Sanford is survived by his son, wife, sister, and two brothers.
