According to a news release posted to the Washington County website today, officials are urging people to wear masks indoors regardless of vaccination status.
The more contagious Delta variant is becoming an increasing concern in densely populated areas and health officials are warning the increased spread is a great risk for unvaccinated people.
Neighboring Multnomah County has also issued a universal mask recommendation for ages 5 and up, including those who have been vaccinated. According to health officials, vaccinated people can still become ill and transmit the virus, and the Delta variant currently accounts for 80% of recently sequenced tests.
The rise in cases is thought to be due to increased social activities as more people are gathering to enjoy the Summer weather and taking advantage of the reopenings across the counties. “Masking is a step we can all take now to keep businesses open and move ahead with our plans for the school year. This is the thing that will make a difference.” said public health director Jessican Guernsey in a news release on Monday.
“Vaccination remains the very best protection against the virus and its variants so for anyone who can, don’t wait. Get your shot,” Guernsey also said in the news release. “But we need a quick course correction to protect children and other people right now. And masks offer that protection.”
