On August 3, 2024, at approximately 7:10 p.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol deputies were alerted by citizens to a drowning at Henry Hagg Lake. It was reported that an adult male jumped off the fishing pier into the water. He surfaced, but then struggled to swim. He submerged again and did not re-surface.

Marine Patrol and Search and Rescue deputies immediately began a search effort with help from multiple agencies. The water temperature at the time of search and recovery operations was 80 degrees Fahrenheit. At approximately 9:30 p.m., the body of 32-year-old Vielman Mijail De La Cruz-Lopez was located. Mr. De La Cruz-Lopez was a resident of Cornelius. 

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the following agencies:

  • Gaston Fire Department
  • Hillsboro Police Department
  • Lake Oswego Fire Department Water Rescue Team
  • Lake Oswego Fire Department Dive Team
  • Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Water Rescue Team
  • Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office
  • Washington County Parks
