A suspect from an injury shooting last month in Downtown Portland has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
On Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 1:45a.m., Central Precinct patrol and Entertainment Detail officers were engaged in high-visibility patrol when they heard gunfire on the south side of West Burnside Street near Southwest 4th Avenue. The officers responded immediately and located an injured adult male victim. The victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance with critical, life-threatening injuries. During the investigation the officers heard another shot fired near Southwest 3rd Avenue and Southwest Ankeny Street and ran toward that as well. Evidence of gunfire was found but no victims or suspects. There were lots of people and vehicles leaving the scene as officers were arriving. At the time, their focus was performing lifesaving trauma first aid on the victim, then securing the crime scene.
The Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) responded to the scene and began an investigation. After weeks of investigative work, ECST detectives developed probable cause to arrest Dwayne R. Driver, 28, of Portland. Investigators applied for and were granted a search warrant for a residence in the 1700 block of Northeast Alberta Street. That warrant was served by members of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) on the morning of Thursday, April 13, 2023. A search of the residence resulted in numerous items of evidence being seized, including one firearm (photo). Mr. Driver was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
The victim’s condition is better. He has been released from the hospital and continues to recover from his injuries.
