On Monday, October 24, 2022, shortly before 3 a.m., a Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputy was at Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center’s Emergency Department with an adult male who was on a civil hold. During the hospital admission process, the adult male charged the deputy and attempted to take the deputy’s firearm.
The adult male ignored the deputy’s commands to stop and continued to attack the deputy and try to gain possession of the deputy’s firearm. During the struggle, the adult male was stabbed multiple times by the deputy.
At no time did the deputy lose control of their firearm and no shots were fired.
The adult male was transported to a different local hospital to be treated for his injuries.
A hospital staff member attempted to assist the deputy during the struggle and sustained minor injuries.
The Washington County Major Crimes Team is leading this investigation.
The deputy involved in the attack was placed on critical incident leave, which is standard.
