On Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 2:21 a.m., officers from the Central Precinct responded to a crash at the west end of the Sellwood Bridge. The single car crash left the car on its roof down on South Macadam Avenue. The driver was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. There were no other occupants in the car.

The Portland Police Bureau Major Crash Team responded to the scene to investigate. During the investigation the Sellwood Bridge and South Macadam Avenue near the bridge was closed in both directions.

The Major Crash Team investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling westbound on the Sellwood Bridge, tried to turn northbound on South Macadam Avenue, lost control, hit a raised island, rolled over the wall and landed upside down below the bridge. Speed and alcohol are believed to have been a factor.
