Within the last 48-hours, Ukrainian military installations have been destroyed by Russian aircraft, Russian troops and tanks have advanced into the heartland of Ukraine, and Russian forces have surrounded the Ukrainian capitol, Kyiv, effectively putting the city under siege.

Anti-war protests have erupted in some cities across the western world, including right here in Oregon, where 150 protestors got together in support of Ukraine.

In a Twitter post, Beaverton’s Mayor, Lacey Beaty, wrote: “I stand with fellow Mayors and Americans in condemning Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine. As a military family we understand up close and personal the devastation of war. Ian and I are keeping the Ukrainian people and their loved ones at the forefront of our thoughts today.”

Beaverton School District sent this email to parents yesterday afternoon:

Events in Eastern Europe

Dear BSD Families and Staff,

I’m sure you’re aware of the increasing tensions in Eastern Europe. Although those events are occuring halfway around the world, they may have ripple effects on our community.

• Families who have connections to Eastern Europe and Russia may be worried for loved ones’ safety.

• Families who have loved ones serving in the U.S. military may be anxious about what these recent events may mean for their service men and women.

• Families who have experienced the previous trauma of war may experience increased stress or anxiety.

Please know that teachers, counselors and other staff in the Beaverton School District stand ready to offer support to our students. We hold all those impacted in our thoughts.
