The City of Lake Oswego Fire Department recently purchased a new fire engine as an investment into the community. The new purchase provides the opportunity to donate the engine’s 1994 predecessor to a U.S.-registered 501 c3 nonprofit organization, the Ukrainian Resistance Foundation, to provide lifesaving support to another community.
Housed at the Westlake Fire Station, the new modern fire engine holds 500 gallons of water and over 2,500 feet of hose, and can pump up to 1,500 gallons per minute. Given the urban-wildfire risk in our community and state, the engine has the ability to “Pump and Roll”, meaning it can drive and spray water at the same time, which is essential for grass and wildland fires. Lastly, the engine has a state-of-the-art technology alerting system notifies drivers who have Apple Play, Waze, and other wayfinding phone applications of an approaching emergency vehicle with lights and sirens. This provides additional safety to other motorists and the firefighters driving in the vehicle. The engine is replacing a 1994 engine and will have a lifespan of 25 years.
With the retirement of the 1994 engine, the City explored options to donate the engine locally, statewide, and internationally to aid other communities. In its research, the Fire Department connected with the Ukrainian Resistance Foundation that procures surplus ambulances and fire apparatus and equipment for use by the State Emergency Services of Ukraine. Ukraine’s fundamental emergency medical and fire service equipment has been destroyed, which severely limits a first responder’s ability to carry out lifesaving duties. Recognized by US Congress and Senate for their efforts, the Foundation works directly with the Ukrainian government to identify and transport emergency equipment to Ukraine. The Engine donation will provide lifesaving equipment and supports the Ukrainian community during a time of great need.
The 1994 engine will be shipped to Ukraine in late July. Before it makes its journey, the City invites the community to say a final ‘goodbye’ at the Star-Spangled Parade & Celebration, Tuesday July 4, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Millennium Plaza Park. Community members are encouraged to write thoughtful messages of support on the Engine as it is a huge morale boost to the Ukrainian people.
