In an effort to deter shoplifting, Tigard Police held a proactive enforcement targeting theft suspects at retail stores, which led to the arrests of 14 people.
On Saturday, February 4th, the enforcement was simultaneously held at three major stores in the Washington Square area as detectives in plain clothes worked with loss prevention employees and patrol officers to identify and apprehend potential shoplifting suspects.
In addition to the 14 arrests, investigators recovered more than $4,000 in merchandise, shoplifting tools and a small number of blue pills that likely contain fentanyl.
The goal of the enforcement is to deter criminal activity and hold people accountable. The Tigard Police Department has seen shoplifting become more violent in recent years as people arm themselves or fight with loss prevention, sometimes leading to physical injury.
