On Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 10:19p.m., East Precinct officers responded to a report of a crash at Southeast 102nd Avenue and Southeast Washington Street. When officers arrived they found two vehicles involved and one rolled over. One of the drivers also had a gunshot wound. An occupant from the other vehicle had serious life-threatening injuries, and officers performed CPR at the scene.
Two people were transported to the hospital by ambulance. The person with the gunshot wound was one of them, and is being treated at the hospital. The other person transported, a passenger in the other vehicle, died at the hospital.
The person who died in this crash is Ryan Ambrose, 11, of Portland, who was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a family member.
The driver of the other vehicle, Duprie Smith, was found to have suffered a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries related to the gunshot wound and the crash. After he was released from the hospital, Smith was lodged in the Multnomah County Detention Center and charged with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and Manslaughter in the First Degree.
The investigation has revealed that speed and alcohol impairment were primary factors in the crash.
